The River Frome’s water meadows were managed from the 1700’s to mid 1900’s by regulating water through them via a series of small man-made channels. This allowed a degree of control over the soil temperature during the spring allowing an early hay crop. The system was operated by men known as “drowners” and was found throughout the Dorset and Hampshire water meadows.
