"The Hidden Heart"
I worked this piece in reclaimed bamboo yarn from India and uses ethnic beads from Tibet and the Philippines. I have also added a row of vintage velvet ribbon on the inside of the ring.
This textile piece is glass frame which measures 35 x 35 cm square and 3.5 cm deep. The frame is white limed as shown in the image. I have shown images of the piece before framing and one image of the piece at the very beginning of the making process. The button is worked on a 25 cm wood frame.
This is a studio piece to show a contemporary interpretation of this heritage craft. The last image shows work in progress and how beads were added to the piece.
The Dorset Buttons Industry originated in Shaftesbury in the 1620s and became major cottage industry throughout Dorset creating employment for many families. By the 1780s 4,000 women and children were employed in the industry. Dorset Buttons were replaced by machine buttons during the first half of the 1800s.
