‘Something Old, Something New’
I drew my inspiration from a wedding I attended in an old Kent barn in 2017 which had a lovely vintage feel. I have worked the Dorset Button in the spiral design using silk yarn in the centre and graduating out with a selection of yarns and fabrics from my collection including vintage blue lace fabric and flower tape.
This textile piece is glass frame which measures 42.2 x 42.2 cm square and 3.5 cm deep. The frame is white limed as shown in the image. I have shown images of the piece before framing and one image of the piece at the very beginning of the making process. The button is worked on a 30 cm wood frame.
This is a studio piece to show a contemporary interpretation of this heritage craft.
The Dorset Buttons Industry originated in Shaftesbury in the 1620s and became major cottage industry throughout Dorset creating employment for many families. By the 1780s 4,000 women and children were employed in the industry. Dorset Buttons were replaced by machine buttons during the first half of the 1800s.
